Vitamin C is one of the most researched ingredients in skincare, and one of the most misunderstood. Here is what really makes a formula work, according to our lab.

Why Vitamin C?

Vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant. It neutralises free radicals from UV and pollution, supports collagen production and fades hyperpigmentation by slowing melanin production.

  • Brightens dull, uneven skin tone
  • Fades dark spots and post-acne marks
  • Boosts the protection of your daily SPF

“The best Vitamin C serum is the one that’s still active when it reaches your skin.”

How to choose a formula

Look past the marketing and check three things: concentration, stability and packaging. Between 10% and 20% is the sweet spot for most skin types; higher rarely means better.

Applying serum with a glass dropper
Airless or dark glass packaging protects Vitamin C from light and air.

Lab tip: If your serum turns dark orange, it has oxidised and lost most of its power. Time for a fresh bottle.

Building it into your routine

  1. Cleanse with a gentle, low-pH cleanser.
  2. Apply 3–4 drops of Vitamin C to dry skin.
  3. Follow with moisturiser, then SPF 30 or higher.

The bottom line

Choose a stable formula between 10–20%, store it away from light, and pair it with daily SPF. Give it four weeks: consistency is what turns a good serum into great skin.
